Remembering George Avanessian

Posted November 19, 2012 10:11 PM by Robert George, FAIA     1 comments

Our chapter was well-represented at George Avanessian's memorial service Monday morning.

George was a charter members of AIASMC. He worked with Paul Gumbinger, Phil Bona, Chris Arnold, Frank Messina, Wil Davies and several others to organize our first few meetings and to visit our neighboring chapters in San Francisco and Santa Clara Valley to solidify our application to headquarters for Chapter status. Before we had a Chapter office, we frequently rotated around member offices to hold our BOD meetings, and we met in George's office several times.

George was a senior at Cal when I arrived there as a freshman in 1960, but I didn't know him then because, as you know, seniors just don't loiter with freshmen. But that all went away as the Chapter took root. George was a very fine man, and he was nice to everyone. It was easy to like him. I don't know of any instance when he turned down either the Chapter or one of its members when his help was needed.

    George Avanessian
George was one of the finest Architects in our Chapter. George always supplied us with his knowledge and efforts to create and establish the SMC Chapter. And of course our snacks at our meetings. I will miss him very much.
    Sincerely,
    Frank Jon Messina, AIA-E
