The American Institute of Architects San Mateo County (AIA SMC) presented the winners of the 2018 Design Awards at a ceremony held at the Portola Valley Town Center on Thursday November 8th, 2018. The biennial program recognized outstanding achievements in architecture and design in San Mateo County or by members of AIA SMC. This year’s recipients were selected by a distinguished panel of Bay Area architects: Anne Fougeron, FAIA, principal at Fougeron Architecture; Christopher Roach, AIA, principal at Studio Vara and adjunct professor at California College of the Arts; and Peter Pfau, FAIA, principal at Pfau Long Architecture. The seven winning projects range from public library, charter high school, life science workplace, and mixed use commercial to condominium loft and private residences. Three levels of achievement were awarded in each of the categories with the distinction of Citation, Merit, and Honor. Honor being the highest award AIA SMC presents to an architect or architectural firm. A special award to recognize Emerging Professional for civic participation and professional mentorship was also presented.
