Apr 28 | Bringing ADUs to Single & Multi-Family Projects

Interested in ADU’s?

Join us April 28th as Jessica Resmini, Serina Calhoun, and Boris Vatkin
will be our guest panelists for a discussion on ADU’s

Meet the Panelists

    • Serina Calhoun has been practicing architecture in the Bay Area for 20 years. Her small team of only 5 people has designed and permitted over 300 ADU units in the city of San Francisco since the program was created. 85% of her work is related to ADU projects. She worked directly with Mayor London Breed’s office to streamline the permitting process for these projects, and create clear guidelines for the Fire Department requirements for these projects.Learning Objectives:
Learn about triggers that disqualify properties from installing ADU’s
Learn how many ADU units can be installed in an existing building
Learn how to evaluate egress compliance for ADU projects
Learn how to use egress routes through existing garages

The panel will present detailed information to help other professionals like you understand how to add units in existing multi-family properties. They will share design tricks, identify things to include in your on-site tour with new clients, and share city resources and processes.

Boris Vatkin holds a BS from the University of California, Berkeley and a JD from Brooklyn Law School. His background in real estate law, program management, and residential and commercial real estate — including with a Fortune 500 company, uniquely positions Boris to provide expertise and contribute to HEART’s portfolio of programs. Having joined HEART in 2017, Boris manages and leads the development of GLADUR and the First-Time Homebuyer Assistance program. He also works closely with the Executive Director in managing HEART’s affordable housing trust fund and making predevelopment and acquisition loans for affordable housing projects.

Boris will be discussing HEART’s Green and Livable Accessory Dwelling Unit Resource (GLADUR) program, which will make it easier and more affordable to build green ADUs. Made possible by climate protection funding from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD), HEART has developed designs for green, all-electric detached ADUs that can be downloaded by the public for free. HEART is also partnering with local jurisdictions to pre-review the designs to streamline the permitting process and reduce approval times for homeowners.

Learning Objectives:
Understand HEART’s unique GLADUR program
Learn about the free designs
Learn about the public benefits of pre-reviewed designs and understanding the pre-review process
Learn about the accompanying free handbook and other resources

Over the past twenty years ADU Collective founder, Jessica Resmini, has practiced a variety of architecture and design in Northern California ranging in commercial, retail and residential design. Between 2008 to 2012 Resmini Architects, Inc designed several second dwelling units and accessory structures for clients. In 2017, it became apparent that California was in a housing crisis and laws were in motion to make it more feasible to build a second unit. Jessica fell in love with the efficiency, joy and mission of designing such units and decided to form a company with a sole focus on accessory structures. Since then, she has made it her sole focus to streamline the process through Mass Customization. The mass produced product the ADU Collective team delivers is a permit set while the actual design of the second unit is customized to each of the clients needs.
